United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)

UMHS students are required to pass the USMLE exams in order to become licensed in the United States.  These exams assess a physician's ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles, and to demonstrate fundamental patient-centered skills, that are important in health and disease and that constitute the basis of safe and effective patient care.

The USMLE is comprised of three seperate examinations that students sit for at the appropriate time. Each of the three Steps of the USMLE complements the others. The exams are administered through out the Medical education process and include Step 1, Step 2 (CK and CS) and Step III. No single Step score can stand alone in the assessment of readiness for medical licensure with regards to safe and effective patient care.  Please refer to for more information.

USMLE Step 1:

The USMLE Step 1 is taken prior to semester 6 at UMHS. This examination assesses whether medical school students understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine.  Throught out the Basic Science Program we prepare our students to sit for Step 1. We have incorporated into our curriculum the Kaplan Medical On Demand Program starting in the first semester.  In the 5th semester we provide a 7 week live review program with outstanding faculty from US medical schools to ensure students success on Step 1.  As a result, our first time pass rate is 94% with an average score of 226 for the Spring 2017-Fall 2018 period.

USMLE Step 2 CK & CS:

The USMLE Step 2 CK & CS are taken prior to graduation from UMHS. These tests assess whether medical school students can apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of clinical science essential for provision of patient care under supervision.  Once students pass Step1 they are automaticlly enrolled in Kaplan's CK and CS review programs.  The CK program includes a 7 month video series covering all the core rotations. It also includes several diagnostic examinations and a large question bank.

USMLE Step 3:

The USMLE Step 3 is taken prior to the completion of residency training. This examination assesses whether medical school graduates can apply medical knowledge, skills, and understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential for the unsupervised practice of medicine.

UMHS Success

UMHS students have performed exceptionally well on these examinations for the following reasons:

1) Development of a comprehensive Basic and Clinical Science Program modeled after the U.S. Programs.

2) UMHS has incorporated into the curriculum the use of shelf examinations developed by the National Board of Examiners (NBME). These exams, which are developed for all the core clinical clerkships and basic science courses are made up of exam questions that are similar in style and format to the USMLE. Virtually every US medical school utilizes these examinations.  The NBME will grade the examinations and provide a full analysis.  This helps students understand their performance as it compares to their counterparts in the United States.

3) UMHS is one of the only foreign medical school to offer a comprehensive review program for Step 1 and Step 2 through Kaplan Medical.  The review program begins in the first semester and continues on through the clinical program.  Further details about the review program is listed above.

We understand how important it is for students to perform well on both Step 1 and 2 of the USMLE and want to provide students with all the resources necessary to ensure your success.  To be competitive in the match students must pass both Steps on the first attempt and obtain the highest score possible.  Kaplan has played a key role in preparing our students for Step 1 with a 7 week comprehesnive reviw program in Maine.

In 2016, UMHS partnered with Kaplan Medical to also provide a comprehensive review program for Step 2 CK and CS.  All students are automatically enrolled in this program once they succesfully passed Step I.  This gives our students the competitive edge they need to ensure a high first time pass rate and exceptional scores.
