Dr. Edith Esparza-Young 

Associate Professor of Learning Development and Language Skills

 

Dr. Esparza-Young earned a Doctorate in Bilingual Education from Texas A&M Kingsville, the first university in the United States to offer a doctorate in this field.

 

Prior to joining UMHS in 2019, Dr. Esparza-Young served as an English Language Specialist for the U.S. Department of State and Georgetown University. The U.S. Embassy in Madrid joined other organizations to fund several grants so that she could provide training for American and Spanish Fulbright Scholars in English and Spanish.

 

The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce selected her to be part of the Latina Leadership Institute in 2016. Her academic positions have included teaching graduate and undergraduate courses at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas A&M San Antonio. Leadership roles have included Program Coordinator for the Bilingual Education Program at Texas A&M San Antonio and co-teaching the inaugural Freshman class with the president of the university. She is a certified teacher in Texas in the areas of English, Spanish, ESL and Bilingual Education.

 

In addition to having 25 years of teaching experience in, she is a native Spanish speaker. She has studied French, German and Russian. She serves as an Editorial Review Board Member for theNABE Journal of Research and Practice and The International Journal of Community and Diversity. She was the Educational Outreach Coordinator for the San Antonio Book Festival in 2018.
