The St. Kitts Campus 

Students complete their Basic Science Program at our state of the art campus on the Caribbean Island of St. Kitts.  During the first four semesters on St. Kitts, students find themselves in a model learning environment that sets the standard for modern medical education.  Over the last 10 years we have invested more than 100 million dollars in developing UMHS.

Technology-Based Campus

UMHS operates one of the newest and most technology advanced campuses.  The St. Kitts campus boasts technological advances on the cutting-edge of health care instruction.  The wireless and networked campus is a key component to ensure that students are well prepared to complete the educational program.  Utilization and understanding of educational software and auto-tutorial learning is emphasized throughout the learning process. 





State of the Art Audio-Visual Equipment

All of the classrooms and laboratories are equipped with state of the art audio-visual equipment and have wireless connectivity for students to access the faculty powerpoint presentations and classnotes.  During class students typically  annotate the faculty presentations and save it to their computer.   Faculty are also recording their lectures and storing it on the Learning Management System, which can be viewed at the students covenience.  We believe that our classroom and IT technology has enhancced student performance which correlates with better outcomes on the USMLE.

The innovative 210-seat auditorium is equipped with audio-visual tools that allow faculty to present critical visual information in the most creative mode available.  The auditorium is outfitted with 56" LED monitors, high definition LCD projectors, an ELMO® presenter, Sympodium, and additional equipment designed to enhance the instructor’s presentation to students.

Histology and Pathology, as well as other courses are taught in the auditorium.  Students no longer use microscopes for these classes.  Instead, students use their laptop/tablet computers during these classes to view the extensive database of histology and pathology slides, as well as to have access to specially designed laboratory manuals.

Multi-Purpose Laboratory Classrooms 

UMHS has two modern 100-seat multi-purpose laboratories, with cutting edge technology including audio-visual equipment, high definition LCD monitors, ELMO® presenters, computers for presentations, and projection microscopes, as well as a significant collection of anatomical models.  The projection microscopes enable faculty to present visually relevant microscopic and pathological images for viewing on monitors located throughout the laboratories.  Both laboratories operate in a wireless environment.  



The UMHS campus has smaller classrooms designed to offer students a more intimate and personalized educational experience.  These classrooms are used for small group instruction, seminars, group study, and closer interaction with faculty members.

Anatomy & Neuroanatomy Laboratories


In May 2008, UMHS opened an 11,000 square-foot anatomy building to house both the gross anatomy and neuroanatomy laboratories.  The gross and neuro laboratories are furnished with approximately 20 dissection platforms each.  Students have a five to one cadaver ratio in gross anatomy and a four to one cadaver ratio in neuroanatomy.  These facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.

A prosected cadaver is utilized for demonstration purposes.  A high resolution camera is able to capture the tiniest of details and project out to the 55” LED monitors that are stationed at the end of each student’s cadaver work table. Computers are at the end of each cadaver table for students to access anatomical software reference material during lab sessions.

As students are dissecting, they are able to view relevant information provided by the faculty in several formats including powerpoint slides and ELMO® presentations.  There are power polls placed at the end of each cadaver table for students who want to bring their laptop/tablet computer to connect to our database of anatomical images.

Human Simulation Laboratories

UMHS is a medical education leader in the use of human simulation models.  Human-computer simulation is an advanced capability that allows students to integrate clinical capabilities with basic science principles.  Faculty members provide simulations that challenge and test students' clinical and decision-making skills.  Students work in the Human Simulation Laboratories throughout their basic science program.

The UMHS Human Simulation Laboratories are designed with the functionality and appearance of a 24-bed hospital ward or clinic.  UMHS has a variety of high and low fidelity simulators including iStan® which is one of the most advanced, realistic, wireless human simulators available today.  It has the ability to mimic jugular vein distention, bilateral chest movement, real breath, heart and bowel sounds, articulated motion and much more.

Library and Learning Resource Center


The Anne Ross Library and Learning Resource Center (LRC) is designed to provide students with a peaceful, enabling atmosphere that is conducive to learning.  The library houses an impressive collection of multimedia, books, and journals in both hard copy and electronic formats.  In addition to medical and health sciences education, the collection provides information resources to support a general arts and science curriculum.  The library has break-out study rooms with computers and audio visual equipment for a variety of viewing and listening needs.

The wireless environment on campus extends throughout the facility and all library and LRC desks are laptop/tablet computer ready.  The LRC is equipped with 60 computers for students to access educational programs, software, online databases, email, and other educational resources.  The library and LRC staff are available to assist students with research and information retrieval, encouraging the ongoing development of information literacy skills.

A lifelong commitment to evidence-based medical practice is fostered in the students through the utilization and promotion of credible information sources, the purchase of extensive online subscription journal databases, and the provision of information retrieval skills training. 

Students may request research, reference, or equipment-use assistance.  The main portal to the library’s catalogue, databases, information toolkits, as well as our other resources and services, can be found on the Anne Ross Library Home Page.  We also invite you to tour the Anne Ross Library Blog, run by UMHS' librarian Ann Celestine, providing a wealth of key information of interest to medical students. 







The University has recently developed a full service gym on campus.  The gym includes a variety of life fitness and Cybex machines, treadmills, elipiticals, bicycles, free-weights, and more.  UMHS also recently constructed a basketball court and is planning to develop a soccer field in the near future.

Campus Bookstore and Café 

The bookstore provides students with required and recommended course textbooks, diagnostic and surgical tools and other essentials.  The café is open throughout the day for meals and snacks.  In addition, the University also established a  food vendor site which offers students a wide range of options throughout the day including both local, international and U.S. cuisine.


Technology Support 

The UMHS campus has an advanced computer and communications network that is managed by the Information and Technology Services (ITS) Department.  The ITS Department is comprised of professionally trained, experienced, and dedicated staff members who are focused on providing responsive support. 

This team supports the University hardware, software, peripherals, shared database systems and multimedia equipment.  The ITS Department provides all students with access to the wifi network and a UMHS email account. 






Portland Maine Campus : 5th Semester


Students return to scenic Portland, Maine in the United States for their 5th semester.  The Portland facility is state-of-the-art.  The facility contains a learning resource center with library access, a skills laboratory, examination rooms, classrooms, a student lounge, and faculty offices.  The UMHS campus is located in close proximity to several teaching hospitals, clinics, and housing in the Portland area.

Disability Accommodations


UMHS attempts to provide reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities.  The University strives to enable students with disabilities to assist themselves in achieving their educational goals and enhancing their leadership development through participation in the facets of campus life.

Students with disabilities may be required to provide documentation of the disability.  The cost of assessment and documentation is the student's responsibility.  Assessment services may not be available in St. Kitts and may need to be procured in the United States or Canada.
